Session A Workshop Descriptions

SA1 – GET LOUD!

Amy Gallimore - Extension Specialist for 4-H, at The University of Tennessee

Come and turn up the volume in this high impact session designed to get you out of your chair and excited about leading activities! There are train wrecks, clothespins, and all sorts of other activities that can teach you how to energize and create a team on a limited budget! Be prepared to get loud, get your groove on, and learn some new tricks of the trade on how to get your audience up and excited about their activity!

SA2 – Promote What You Love: 4-H

Allyson McMahan – National 4-H Council Marketing Communications Coordinator, Chevy Chase, MD.; Laura Phillips Garner – National 4-H Council Marketing Communications Director, Chevy Chase, MD.; Jeannette Rea-Keywood – 4-H Agent, Cumberland County, NJ

Promote 4-H in your community and build a consistent image for 4-H using tools collected and developed by 4-H's national marketing communications team. Learn about the latest national 4-H brand research, the 4-H resources web site and the new 4-H Brand Network. Come and share your marketing ideas and challenges.

SA3 – Positive 4-H Parent Development

Laura Bovitz – 4-H Agent, Middlesex County, NJ; Alayne Torretta – 4-H Agent, Warren County, NJ

Are the parents of your 4-H'ers always a positive influence? Are they a help or a hindrance? Do they resemble "Peter Positive" and "Sally Supportive"? Or are they more like "Ima Cheater" or "Win Atallcosts"? Presenters will show you how to strengthen positive traits of parents even if they're a "Nee Glect".

SA4 – I Stress, You Stress, We all Need to De-Stress!

Lydia B. Blalock, Ph.D. – RCE Youth Development Specialist, New Brunswick, NJ; Teen Presenters

Everyone needs stress. Stress kills. Kids don't stress. Kids should learn coping skills. Stress is unavoidable. It's all in your mind. Discover the facts about stress, then practice coping techniques in this entertaining workshop for youth, adults and adult who work with youth. The life you save could be your own!

SA5 – Club Reporter Workshop

Michele Walfred – Delaware 4-H Leader, 4-H Extension Staff and Journalism Major, Georgetown, DE; Co-presenter, Jr. Council Member

This workshop motivates leaders and club reporters to develop their roles as both club reporters and as Junior Marketing Executives for 4-H. Using both humor and practical examples, youth learn how to make their club reports exciting, how to interact with local media and create press releases. Training is valuable to youth and leaders. A CD ROM with resources, Power Points, templates and examples will be provided to each participant and permission to adapt materials for their local 4-H club.

SA6 – Writing in Style – Polymer Clay Pens  

Annette Devitt – 4-H Agent, Salem County, NJ

Polymer clay can be used to create a variety of effects. Learn techniques and turn them into unique pens. Participants will learn how to layer clays to make canes, create marbled effects, gradate color, use Mokume-Gane, and add texture to the clay.

SA7 – The World is in Our Hands

Lorraine Busch – 4-H Youth Development, Penn State Extension

Trash, trash everywhere. What are we going to do with it? We will discuss: reduction, reuse, recycling and composting. Our activity will be to make two games to help understand the importance of cutting down on trash and to make our earth a cleaner place to live in. We will also make a mini-landfill and a mini-dump.

SA8 – Building Youth Leaders through Service and Leadership

Nicole Webster – Assistant Professor, Pennsylvania State University; Jacklyn Bruce - Assistant Professor, Pennsylvania State University

The goal of this interactive workshop is to provide extension educators with tools and resources on helping youth create connections between service and leadership. By merging these two learning opportunities, youth can begin to use their leadership skills in real-life situations within their school, communities and the world.

SA9 – Stamping 101 – The Basics

Clarice M. Coleman – 4-H Volunteer & State 4-H Secretary, Kingston, RI

Stamp a beautiful greeting card that your friends won't throw away! This workshop will teach the basics of rubber stamping. Stamps, papers, inks, embossing powders, along with the technique of embossing will be covered and you will leave class with two one-of-a-kind Christmas and/or Birthday cards.

SA10 – Science Activities for 1st-3rd Grades

Rachel Bijaczyk – 4-H Program Assistant, Somerset County, NJ

Explore and discover the natural world with your club members. Hands-on activities to spark excitement, develop interest and invite discovery in the world around them. Come, do the inch walk, explore "holes", design a national park and see the world through the eyes of a bug.

SA11 – 4-H 101 – Essential Elements of the 4-H Experience

Linda Strieter - 4-H Agent, Gloucester County, NJ; Chad Ripberger – 4-H Agent, Mercer County, NJ

Through 4-H 101, participants will better understand the purpose and structure of 4-H, learn how to help youth develop life skills through 4-H clubs and expand opportunities for themselves and club members. Participants will take away activities and ideas to enhance their 4-H experience in club work and beyond.

Session B Workshop Descriptions

SB1 – How to Handle the Extreme "Difference of Opinion" From Start to Finish

Alayne Torretta – 4-H Agent, Warren County, NJ

Conflict that escalates into more than just a disagreement is an unsettling experience for everyone involved. Volunteers who are responsible for others are especially likely to feel frightened, confused and wondering: "What could have been done to prevent this?" Learn techniques how to prevent and handle the ultimate "difference of opinion".

SB2 – My Life In One Page

Amy Gallimore - Extension Specialist for 4-H, The University of Tennessee

You have great experiences, have done tons of activities, and you are a member of several organizations...how do you combine all of that into a resume? Learn how to market your volunteer experience and learn what to do and NOT to do before, during and after the big interview in this interactive career building session! From the resume to the job offer, this session will show you how to combine your skills and experiences into great opportunity!

SB3 – Make Your 4-H Stars Shine! How to Create and Deliver a Press/Media Release

Lori Space Day – Zoologist, Public Relations, Educational Outreach, Space Farms Zoo and Museum, NJ

The goal of this seminar is to remove the hesitation and create the inspiration to write about your club and/or club activities, to teach the skills needed to find contact information and to make your 4-H stars shine with the approval of your local 4-H office.

SB4 – Strengthening Families through 4-H Programs

Jeannette Rea-Keywood – 4-H Agent, Cumberland County, NJ

Families are critical in the emotional, social, spiritual, and physical development of children. Research shows that family involvement can improve children's success in school and communities. This fun and interactive workshop will provide an overview of various successful collaborative family programs including the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Strengthening Family Involvement Initiative. Participants will have the opportunity to do some activities that focus on building family strengths.

SB5 – Discover Your True Colors!

Laura Bovitz – 4-H Agent, Middlesex County, NJ; Lucille Razzano – 4-H Program Coordinator, Somerset County, NJ

True Colors is a program to help people understand themselves and the behaviors and characteristics of others. It promotes understanding, acceptance, group unity and group effectiveness. Participants will discover their own unique personality profile and will participate in discussion and role play to help them work toward a better understanding of those they deal with on a daily basis.

SB6 – Get Moving – Get Healthy with New Jersey 4-H

Annette Devitt – 4-H Agent, Salem County, NJ; Sharon Gore – 4-H Program Associate, Mercer County, NJ; Sue Makres - 4-H Program Associate, Atlantic County, NJ; Karen Mansue – 4-H Program Associate, Ocean County, NJ; Virginia Krzyzanowski - 4-H Program Associate, Monmouth County, NJ

The New Jersey 4-H Program is addressing the childhood overweight/obesity issue through fun, interactive action stations at their county fairs. Each of the activity stations is staffed by Teen Food and Fitness Ambassadors. Learn how the program was developed and experience the activities.

SB7 – National Horse Events - What are they and how to prepare?

Scott Anderson, Chair of the NJ Horse Project Advisory Council; Lori Wunderlich, NJ 4-H Horse Judging Coach

4-H Horse Club leaders interested in learning more about Hippology, Horse Judging, Equine Presentations and Horse Bowl should plan to attend this round table discussion led by the New Jersey 4-H Eastern National Round Up Coaches from New Jersey. These 4-H Volunteers have a wealth of experience to share with other 4-H Horse Club volunteers. They will describe each of the events, how youth are selected for a state team, how to prepare youth for the events and how New Jersey raises funds to pay for the trip to Louisville. This is a Must- go workshop for any 4-H Horse Club leader!

SB8 – Who's In Charge Here

Sandra H. Shorly – Organizational Leader Top Notch 4-H Equestrians, Boyertown, PA; Teen Leaders from Top Notch 4-H Equestrians 4-H Club

We instruct leaders in ways to help their members truly run their clubs. We have found that when members are given the opportunity to handle the everyday running of the organization they tend to become more loyal, active and interested in the whole program, thus becoming better members. This is an informal format that we use. We have a lot of fun and share a host of information that any club can use.

SB9 – Naturally Cultivating Success: An Introduction to the RCE Youth Farmstand Program

Lydia Blalock, Debi Cole, Chad Ripberger, Linda Strieter, Ellen Williams – New Jersey RCE Youth Farmstand working group

Participants will learn about the RCE Youth Farmstand Program – an exciting summer job readiness program where youth gain valuable skills by operating their own farm stands. 4-H staff from four diverse NJ counties will share their experience with the program's curriculum, training, operation, enrichment activities and evaluation.

SB10 – Basic Leather Craft

Chris Hatter – Manager Tandy Leather Factory, Harrisburg, PA; Bill Davis – Manager Tandy Leather Factory, Essex, MD

This class will teach you the basics of leather stamping, dying and finishing. You will learn about the leather and the techniques used to work with it. This hands-on workshop will be a great experience for anyone who has or has not had the pleasure of doing leather craft. You will walk away with the basics to pass on to others.

SB11 – Engaging Youth, Grades 1-3 in 4-H

Valerie G. Kreutler – 4-H Program Coordinator, Somerset County, NJ

How do we reach them? Now that we have them, what do we do with them? Bring stuff and share your ideas about recruiting, involving, and empowering the youngest 4-H'ers - Prep and Cloverbud members. We will share some of our successes from our county, please bring your ideas as well.

Session C Workshop Descriptions

SC1 – CHEER for 4-H - Marketing 101

Michele Walfred - Delaware 4-H Leader, 4-H Extension Staff and Journalism Major, Georgetown, DE

Learn how to cheer for 4-H in ways that make a difference and spread the message about 4-H programming. You will learn the ABC's of writing effective press releases, how to interact with reporters and encourage feature stories. Learn easy projects club members can make to promote 4-H. Attendees will receive a CD ROM full of templates and resources and a special surprise to help you CHEER for 4-H!!!

SC2 – Explore the "Treasures" of 4-H for Fun & Learning

Jeannette Rea-Keywood - 4-H Agent, Cumberland County, NJ; Lydia Blalock - RCE Youth Development Specialist, New Brunswick, NJ

You can help youth in grades 2- 4 have fun while exploring the 4-H program. This workshop will use a hands-on approach to introduce a sampling of activities contained in the new 4-H CCS "Exploring the Treasures of 4-H" curriculum. This curriculum consists of a Youth Guide and a Helper's Guide with group activities.

SC3 – 4-H Presentations Go High Tech – Effectively!

Annette Devitt – 4-H Agent, Salem County, NJ

4-H members are rapidly trading posters for Power Point type programs. Participants will learn tips for using Power Point type programs. This will enable them to help 4-H members effectively use Power Point's many options to produce an excellent presentation rather than a mind-boggling, unfocused, conglomeration of special effects.

SC4 – Animal Emergencies: How Prepared is Your County?

Helen Ferraro – 4-H Program Assistant, Ocean County, NJ; Linda Horner – 4-H Program Assistant, Cape May County, NJ

This workshop will cover basic concepts involved at the county level for preparing to manage animal emergencies, including, disasters such as fires, flooding hurricanes, nuclear accidents and bioterrorism. Topics covered will include evacuation and sheltering of animals and how county 4-H programs can become involved.

SC5 – Spreading the Word....HOOAH!

How one youth and adult partnership is creating community awareness about issues facing military youth across New Jersey.  

Rachel Everett – 4-H Agent, Morris County, NJ; Kelly Elam – Morris County 4-H Member, Army Reserve Youth/Operation Military Kids State Team

Interactive games and activities will introduce New Jersey's teen-focused program, "Speak Out Military Kids" (SOMK) and its objective to build community awareness about the unique challenges facing military youth. Participants will leave the workshop with not only a better understanding of the needs of military youth, but also the knowledge and skills to be able to develop an effective youth and adult partnership like SOMK.

SC6 – Weaving: Wagon–Wheel Style Weaving

Brenda Grey – Assistant Project Leader, Top Notch 4-H Equestrians, Bechtelsville, PA, & Teen Leader

Weaving need not be expensive or done on complicated equipment. Participants will learn; to look at ordinary objects and see extraordinary uses for them, how to recycle materials and make useful equipment from things that are usually thrown away and how to take yard-goods and make weaving material from it.

SC7 – How Can You Express Yourself? Let Me Count the Ways!

Ellen Williams – 4-H Agent, Monmouth County, NJ; Linda Strieter – 4-H Agent, Gloucester County, NJ

Express Yourself! Is a new 4-HCCHS Communications curriculum which offers many exciting learning opportunities for youth grades 3 -12...songwriting, advertising, use of technology, acting and much more!

In this workshop, volunteers will enjoy exploring this wide variety of communications activities and discovering how they can include these in any of their 4-H programs, whether they are clubs or camps, after school programs or school enrichment.

SC8 – Puppets, Puppets Everywhere!

Betty Sommerville – Leader, Practically Prepared Pretty Unpredictable 4-H Puppetry Club, Somerset County, NJ; Matthew Leonard – President, Garden State Puppetry Guild, Lakewood, NJ

Create simple but different styles of puppets and learn how to easily move them to express emotions and actions. This workshop will help you build a performance club that can connect with your community and your state puppetry guild's resources. Handouts about basic puppetry as well as bibliographies of books, media and websites will be available.

SC9 – Make Science Your Member Magnet

Rachel Bijaczyk – 4-H Program Assistant, Somerset County, NJ; Lucille Razzano – 4-H Program Coordinator, Somerset County, NJ

Science is magic and magic is science. Let's look at some fun hands-on experiments and discover the secrets behind them. Learn techniques using science to grow your program, acquire new members and more volunteers.

SC10 – Gardening Medley

James Nichnadowicz – 4-H Agent, Union County, NJ

In a fun, hands-on fashion, 4-H Agent James Nichnadowicz will cover a variety of gardening projects that you can do with children. He will demonstrate how to start a windowsill herb garden, how to grow a kids' favorite fruit: watermelon, starting tomato and marigold seedlings, controlling insects on houseplants the fun way, tree planting and an easy group project: self watering window boxes.

SC11 – Visual Arts: The Other Side of Your Brain

Liesel Dreisbach – Senior Extension Educator 4-H Youth Development, Lehigh County, PA

Challenge the creative side of your brain through the visual arts, no talent required. Two new national project books introduce teens to drawing, sculpture, fabric arts, painting, printing and graphic arts. Teens develop positive identity, communication and problem solving skills. We'll do several project activities and discuss project management.
