Food and Fitness Ambassador Training

[Get Moving Get Healthy New Jersey] Are you in grades 8-13? Are you interested in an exciting new leadership opportunity? Do you like talking to people and sharing information? Are you interested in learning about eating healthy and being active? Then becoming a 4-H Food & Fitness Ambassador may be right for you. What exactly is a Food & Fitness Ambassador? Read on for more details.

Since 2005 county 4-H Food & Fitness Ambassadors have promoted healthy eating and encouraged people to engage in physical activities through displays at county fairs, family fun events and other community gatherings. These things will continue, but the major focus in 2009-10, thanks to a major grant from Wal-Mart will be to encourage each 4-H club in every county to incorporate health, fitness and safety activities into their monthly meetings. All New Jersey 4-H clubs are being encouraged to elect a club health officer to facilitate these activities.

We are looking for two to three teens from each county to serve as 4-H Food and Fitness Ambassadors. Their primary responsibilities will be:

  • Attend the free weekend training at Lindley G. Cook 4-H Camp from September 25 through 27.

  • Promote the concept of 4-H club health officers to the clubs in your county.

  • Coordinate training for your county's club health officers.

  • Attend a follow-up meeting in January or February.

  • Take responsibility for the Food & Fitness display at your county fair. This includes set-up and take-down and staffing during prime visitor hours during the fair.

  • Recruit other 4-H members to staff the display at fair.

Registration

If you are interested in becoming a 4-H Food and Fitness Ambassador, please plan to attend the training session Friday, September 25 through Sunday, September 27. Complete the registration forms and return them to your county 4-H office by Monday, September 14.

There is no registration fee. The program is made possible through a grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation. Registration includes food and activity supplies for the weekend. Participants are responsible for bringing their own sleeping bags/bedding and toiletries.

Transportation

We are making transportation available primarily for youth coming from southern and central New Jersey. Arrangements have been made for 2 busses to take the Food & Fitness Ambassadors to camp for the training on September 25 -27. One will travel up the Parkway making pick-ups at rest stops that will be determined after we know who is coming. The other will travel up the 295 corridor. More information will be emailed to participants after they register for the training. If there are questions about transportation, please contact Peggy McKee or Annette Devitt at 856-769-0090 or devitt@njaes.rutgers.edu.
